Voilà, here is the result of my recent photo project that was part of a course in art photography. The task was to choose four different categories of art photography, and I chose thematic photo art (existentialism), city photography, object-based photo art and finally experimental/abstract photo art. All individual photos and the texts related to the photo series are available in my gallery, so please have a look. The first series is called Symbiosis. I could not have done it without my beloved boyfriend who lent me his military camouflage net and assisted in all kind of ways with the photo shooting. Since I had to be the photographer, I took the portrait photos with the help of a remote shutter, but my boyfriend had to hold the camera at a scrubby spot in the middle of the woods where my tripod could not do the job. Yes, it was cold outside, but it was totally worth it.
Voilà, här är resultatet av mitt senaste fotoprojekt inom ramen för en kurs i konstfotografi. Uppgiften var att välja fyra olika kategorier av fotokonst och jag valde tematisk fotokonst (existentialism), stadsfotografering, objektbaserad fotokonst och slutligen experimentell/abstrakt fotokonst. Alla individuella foton och texter till fotoserierna finns tillgängliga i mitt galleri, så ta gärna en titt. Den första serien heter Symbios. Jag skulle inte ha klarat detta utan min älskade pojkvän vars militära kamouflagenät jag fick låna samt assisterade på alla sätt och vis med fotograferingen. Eftersom jag måste vara fotografen tog jag porträttfotona med hjälp av en fjärrutlösare, men min pojkvän måste hålla kameran på en snårig plats mitt i skogen där mitt stativ inte kunde göra jobbet. Ja, det var kallt utomhus, men det var minsann värt mödan.
Actually, I had not intended to use these photos that constitute the photo pair called Reflection, they were just snapshots. However, on second thought, I realised that they work great together. The photo to the left is from Kaivokatu in Helsinki where I have walked many times back in the days on my way to the Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki to attend lectures as part of my doctoral studies (I have never lived in Helsinki, though). Nevertheless, I took the photo this year when we had art history classes at Ateneum, so I kind of feel that I have come full circle now, considering everything that has happened the last few years. The photo to the right is from the Vaasa waterfront area where I have taken my daily walks for many years, and it is without doubt the area in Vaasa that I have taken most photos of from different angles.
Jag hade faktiskt inte tänkt använda dessa foton som utgör fotoparet Reflektion, de var bara tagna i förbifarten. Dock vid närmare eftertanke insåg jag att de fungerar bra ihop. Fotot till vänster föreställer Brunnsgatan i Helsingfors där jag har gått många gånger för flera år sedan på väg mot Juridiska fakulteten vid Helsingfors universitet för att delta i föreläsningar som en del av mina doktorandstudier (dock har jag aldrig bott i Helsingfors). Fotot är däremot taget i år när vi hade lektioner i konsthistoria vid Ateneum, så jag känner liksom att cirkeln är sluten nu, med tanke på allt som har hänt de senaste åren. Fotot till höger föreställer en del av Stadsfjärden i Vasa där jag har gått mina dagliga promenader i många år, och det är utan tvekan det område i Vasa som jag har fotograferat mest från olika vinklar.
The inspiration for the series Fragment came mostly from the Finnish photo artist Sanna Kannisto who creates stylised photos of real birds. However, I went for different objects in the art studio on campus. My ‘thrifts’ consisted of my boyfriend’s paint brushes (obviously not the ones that he has used the most), an abandoned aquarelle palette in the common studio area, a frame of stretcher bars that I had not put the canvas on yet, and finally some glass baubles which used to be decorations of some sort, but nowadays I use them for artistic purposes. I am very pleased with the result, considering that I used my boyfriend’s art studio as a makeshift photo studio because of the natural day light. The black background is a bed sheet that we had to iron to get the perfect shot.
Inspirationen till serien Fragment kom mestadels från den finska fotokonstnären Sanna Kannisto som skapar stiliserade foton av riktiga fåglar. Jag ställde däremot in siktet på olika objekt i ateljén på campus. Mina “fynd” bestod av min pojkväns målarpenslar (uppenbarligen inte dem som han använt mest), en övergiven akvarellpalett i den gemensamma delen av ateljén, en kilram som jag ännu inte hade spänt upp duk på, och slutligen några glaskulor som förr var dekorationer av något slag, men numera använder jag dem för konstnärliga ändamål. Jag är mycket nöjd med resultatet, med hänsyn till att jag använde min pojkväns ateljé som en improviserad fotostudio på grund av det naturliga dagsljuset. Den svarta bakgrunden är ett lakan som vi blev tvungna att stryka för att få den perfekta bilden.
The series Illusion was an experiment with water and food colouring. I presented this work in the form of a video because movement added to the experience. I am planning to make more artistic short films in the future, so perhaps I will publish them here on the website and on Youtube.
Serien Illusion var ett experiment med vatten och karamellfärg. Jag presenterade detta verk i form av en video eftersom rörelse förhöjde upplevelsen. Jag planerar att göra fler konstnätliga kortfilmer i framtiden, så eventuellt kommer jag att publicera dem här på hemsidan och på Youtube.
That was all for now, folks. However, there will certainly be more photos, as I have found the joy that I had lost in making photo art. We also had the chance to practise for future exhibitions, so I had printed all photo series except Illusion using the high-quality photo printer at school. I will continue practising, and I hope to have an exhibition some day, either as a solo artist or together with others.
Det var allt för tillfället, gott folk. Det kommer dock garanterat att knäppas fler foton, eftersom jag har återfunnit glädjen i att skapa fotokonst. Vi fick också chansen att öva inför framtida utställningar, så jag hade printat alla fotoserier utom Illusion med skolans högkvalitativa fotoprinter. Jag kommer att fortsätta öva och jag hoppas kunna ställa ut mina verk en vacker dag, antingen en egen utställning eller tillsammans med andra konstnärer.
