Hi everybody! I thought it was time to share a glimpse of what I have been up to lately. The last few weeks we have worked with both digital and analogue photography at Novia. Although Novia has discontinued the degree programme in photography, we who study fine arts are still taught photography, and we have the option to specialise in photo art. Until I now, I have been a self-taught hobby photographer (including editing), but there is much more to learn, of course. This post contains photos of some experimental digital photography. In later posts, I will show you the photo presentation I did for the final task of the course as well as the analogue photography, so keep your eyes open!
I took the first two photos above in the photo studio at Novia. We were divided into smaller groups, and my group was the last group to work in the studio with our teacher who acted as assistant (or our slave for the day as he phrased it, haha). The other groups had continued with portrait photography which we had practised in an earlier session. However, my group decided that we wanted to do something else, and I, who usually take initiatives, suggested that we use a mirror because I knew we had mirrors at campus since we had used such for self-portraits in the drawing course. Another member of the group had a mug that we found suitable for the experiment. Just before it was our turn to enter the studio, I noticed a chair and got another idea. So, after having experimented with the mirror and the mug in different lighting (the original photo was in colour, but the edited version above was more in line with my vision), I asked the teacher if we could put the chair on the product photo shooting table, and then I climbed up a ladder. One advantage of shooting in a photo studio is that you have full control of the lighting and thus the shadows, so I achieved the result that I was aiming for.
The last photo was originally just a snapshot I took of the brick wall when we were testing different settings outside the photo studio, and I accidentally imported it to my computer along with the batch of my studio photos. However, when I was about to delete the photo, I saw potential in it, and gradually my inner vision turned into a photographic work. I call it ‘Ghosted’ with reference to what I have experienced in both my personal and my professional life. It was not only someone or something that suddenly disappeared, but also I am gradually turning into a ghost in a metaphorical sense. Nevertheless, through art abstract thoughts can materialise and last longer than a brief moment. That is why I like photography as an artistic way of immortalising a moment in time or making the invisible visible.
Hej allihopa! Jag tyckte att det var dags att dela med mig av en glimt av vad jag har sysslat med på sistone. De senaste veckorna har vi jobbat med både digital och analog fotografering vid Novia. Fastän Novia har lagt ner fotografutbildningen så får vi som studerar bildkonst fortfarande undervisning i fotografi och man kan välja att specialisera sig inom fotokonst. Jag knäppte de två första fotona ovan i fotostudion vid Novia. Vi var indelade in mindre grupper och min grupp var sista gruppen att arbeta i studion med vår lärare som agerade assistent (eller vår slav för dagen som han formulerade det, haha). De andra grupperna hade fortsatt med porträttfotografering som vi hade övat på under en tidigare lektion. I vår grupp beslutade vi dock att vi ville göra något annat och jag, som oftast är initiativtagare, föreslog att vi skulle använda en spegel då jag visste att det fanns speglar på campus eftersom vi hade använt sådana för att göra självporträtt i teckningskursen. En annan gruppmedlem hade en mugg som vi tyckte att var lämplig för experimentet. Precis innan det var vår tur att gå in i studion fick jag syn på en stol och fick en till idé. Så efter att vi hade experimenterat med spegeln och muggen i olika belysning (originalfotot var i färg, men den redigerade versionen ovan stämde bättre överens med min vision) frågade jag läraren om vi kunde ställa stolen på bordet som är avsett för produktfotografering, och sedan klättrade jag upp på en stege. En fördel med att fotografera i en fotostudio är att man har full kontroll över belysningen och således skuggorna, så jag fick det resultat som jag strävade efter.
Det sista fotot var ursprungligen bara något jag snabbt tog av tegelväggen när vi testade olika inställningar utanför fotostudion, och jag råkade importera det till min dator tillsammans med studiofotona. Men när jag skulle radera fotot såg jag potential i det och gradvis förvandlades min inre vision till ett fotografiskt verk. Jag kallar det “Ghosted” med hänvisning till vad jag har upplevt i både privat- och yrkeslivet. Det var inte bara någon eller något som plötsligt försvann, utan även jag håller på att förvandlas till ett spöke i metaforisk mening. Genom konst kan dock abstrakta tankar materialiseras och existera längre än ett ögonblick. Därför gillar jag fotografering som ett konstnärligt sätt att föreviga en tidpunkt eller att göra det osynliga synligt.
